Preview #15: Injuries plague Predators as Nashville visits Anaheim
0Season Records
Nashville Predators 7-5-2
Anaheim Ducks 5-6-3

Pekka Rinne will likely be back in net for Nashville when the Predators take on the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night at Honda Center in the second game of back-to-back contests in Southern California.
Tuesday night in Los Angeles, the Predators lost a game in regulation for the first time since a 3-1 loss to San Jose at Bridgestone Arena on October 25th. The Kings were in the midst of a five game losing skid that was halted with the win. Los Angeles went into the third period with a 4-2 lead over Nashville. When entering the final frame of a game with a lead, the Kings had 61-0-3 record in their last 64 outings heading into Tuesday night’s contest. The Predators were unable to capitalize on a King’s squad that had played 24 hours earlier in San Jose and Anders Lindback recorded his first loss of the season.
With just 1:21 left in the game, Patric Hornqvist brought the Predators within one goal of tying the game with the extra attacker on the ice and the net empty. It was the sixth consecutive game that Hornqvist scored a goal.
Wednesday night will be the Predators second meeting against the Ducks in less than two weeks. On October 29th, the Predators hosted their first game against the Ducks since eliminating Anaheim from the playoffs in 6 games in last year’s Western Conference quarter finals. While Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf said that the team wasn’t concerned with playing their old playoff nemesis, Hart Trophy winner Corey Perry commented that some players in the dressing room had a long memory.
Decorated defensive prospects, Ellis and Ekholm, ready to compete for roster spots
2With the Predators rookie camp roster headed to Florida for games against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers rookies on Monday and Tuesday, two members of the squad traveling with the team are looking to impress, with positions for the final defensive pairing up for grabs.
In Jon Blum, Nashville will already feature one rookie on the back end. Blum was called up toward the end of the season to replace an injured Francis Bouillon, but maintains his rookie status. With Bouillon still out, Cody Franson being traded to Toronto and Shane O’Brien signing a one-year deal with Colorado, the number 5, 6 and 7th defensive positions are all available. Just how many rookie defensemen this year’s Predators team will feature has yet to be decided.
Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm are vying for roster spots. The other three likely candidates to fill in the available positions are Roman Josi, Teemu Laakso and Jack Hillen. In August, Hillen signed a two-way, one-year contract with the Predators after playing the past two seasons with the New York Islanders.
Josi and Laakso have Milwaukee experience and are not participating in rookie camp. With Admirals experience in tow, Josi and Laakso perhaps have a competitive advantage, along with Hillen, over Ellis and Ekholm.
Despite the odds of making the team out of camp without first playing in the AHL, Ellis and Ekholm are not worried about the competition.
Predators rookie camp set to begin Saturday
0It is a sure sign that hockey is just around the corner when teams take to the ice for informal practices, as was the case on Tuesday for the Nashville Predators at Centennial Sportsplex.
The Tennessean’s Josh Cooper tweeted that it was David Legwand who was leading most of the on-ice drills.

Tuesday, the Predators released the schedule for this year’s training camp as well as the roster. While training camp doesn’t officially start until September 16th, the rookie camp begins this Saturday, September 10th, at Centennial Sportsplex.
This year’s rookie camp is especially exciting as there are several roster holes to be filled for Nashville, especially in the area of defense. Ryan Ellis will be on hand after completing his decorated junior career. Mattias Ekholm will also be in attendance. With Francis Bouillon unlikely to be ready for the start of training camp, the Borlange, Sweden native is expected to challenge Ellis, Roman Josi, Jack Hillen and Teemu Laakso for two defensive positions available.
Craig Smith will also be participating in the rookie camp. Smith played for the United States at the World Championships and was named one of the top players on the squad. A former Wisconsin Badger, Smith decided to turn pro after just two years of college. In July, Predators General Manager, David Poile, suggested Smith might be NHL-ready.
Practices are held on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30-12:00 pm. Both on-ice sessions are open to the public.
Preds Legwand and Ward, stepping up when it counts most
0The Nashville Predators have been looking for a playoff hero during the Western Conference semi-finals. Goaltender Pekka Rinne has been incredible, keeping the Predators in close one-goal games. But scoring goals against Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo has not been easy.

Mike Fisher, Shea Weber, Jerred Smithson and Jordin Tootoo–heroes in the series against Anaheim–have been all but kept off the scoresheet. Fisher recorded his first point in the series on Saturday night when he set up Joel Ward’s snap shot early in the third period to give the Predators a 3-2 lead.
Predators forwards, and linemates, Ward and David Legwand rose to the challenge Saturday night in Vancouver, each scoring two goals for Nashville.
“Our backs are still against the wall. We have to come home and play hard and get another win at home. You have to fight your way out. We were in a crunch for the last 20-30 games. Hopefully we will be ready to go,” Legwand said about the Game 5 victory and being prepared for Game 6 on Monday.
Predators veteran forwards silence critics with solid play
0As the Nashville Predators enter tonight’s contest against the Los Angeles Kings, two veteran are leading the way offensively for the club. In fact, no other Nashville forwards have been more productive since the middle of January than David Legwand and Martin Erat.

The offense provided by Legwand and Erat has been fairly consistent over the past month and a half and has been a big help for Predators goaltender, Pekka Rinne. Nashville is nearly unbeatable when they post three or more goals in a game, with a 33-4-1 record. “That’s great,” Rinne said of the recent play of Erat and Legwand, ”Obviously, this time of year it is so important so it is great to see those couple of big guys playing so well. We need that at the moment. Hopefully they can keep it going.”
Legwand, was the first ever draft pick of the Nashville Predators, chosen second overall in 1998. Erat was the 191st pick of the Predators in the 1999 Entry Draft. The two forwards are the longest tenured members of Predators and are tops in nearly every offensive statistical category for the Predators. Legwand, for instance, holds the record for most points, goals, assists, games played, game-winning-goals, overtime points, multi-point games and multi-goal games.
Vokoun on friends, playing in Nashville and player development
0
After eight years with the Predators, Tomas Vokoun holds all the records for goaltending in Nashville. Vokoun is the leader for single-season record for wins (36), wins (161), losses (159), goaltender appearances (383), shutouts (21), and record for saves (9,657). Vokoun remains a fan favorite in Nashville. His name is cheered when announced he will start in goal for the visiting team, an announcement usually met with jeers throughout the crowd at Bridgestone Arena.

The Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic native returned to Nashville over the weekend when the Florida Panthers put their three-game winning streak on the line against the Predators. Vokoun was coming off a 3-0 shutout of the Capitals, a team that has lost three in a row and is 4-5-1 in its last 10 games. A shutout against a team with Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin and Nikolas Backstrom up front with Mike Green on the blue line is no easy feat and is a good momentum builder. “Yeah I felt pretty good beating Washington. They are a good team. On the road it was a great game for us,” Vokoun said.
New role for Tootoo leads to more confidence, patience on ice
0This year marks Jordin Tootoo’s 7th campaign in the National Hockey League. At the start of the season, Tootoo was on the Predators’ fourth line, used as an agitator, the spark of the energy line. Tootoo played 9:18 in the home opener against the Anaheim Ducks, 10:59 against Chicago on the road and then 8:32 against the Blues back home in Nashville.

During the fourth game of the season, Marcel Goc got injured against the Washington Capitals. Goc suffered a separated shoulder on a hit by Niklas Backstrom. With Goc out, the lines had to be reshuffled, especially with other injuries at the position of forward plaguing Nashville. Center Matthew Lombardi has been out since after the Chicago game and Martin Erat was just returning to action after missing a couple games with back spasms.
