Hornqvist’s first goal of season frustrates Garon, Boucher in Predators 5-3 win over Tampa Bay
1Nashville won its first home game of the season on Thursday night when the Predators put five pucks behind Mathieu Garon to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 in front of 16 619 in attendance at Bridgestone Arena.
With the game tied at two after the first period, Patric Hornqvist scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Matt Halischuk.
“It was great forechecking by [Matt] Halischuk and [Blake] Geoffrion. They created the turnover. Geoffrion tried to shoot it and it ended up on the stick of Halischuk. He made a great play to me. I had an empty net. It was nice to get that first goal out of the way,” Hornqvist said.
Not everyone agreed it was a good goal.
Garon was tripped on the play. “He clipped me behind the net and tripped me and the ref told me he didn’t see it. Sometimes they don’t see it, so it happens. It’s frustrating but you’ve got to forget about it and focus on the next one. I’ve got to make some saves. If I make a couple more saves, it’s a different game. I’ve got to be better than that,” he said.
Hornqvist’s stock continues to rise
0In the September 27th edition of The Hockey News, the magazine ranked the top 20 players in each position. With the strength of the Predators back end, it is no surprise that Pekka Rinne comes in at number 12 on the top goalies list. Tomas Vokoun is listed at no. 9. It is also no surprise that defensive partners Shea Weber and Ryan Suter are ranked 7th and 12th respectively. Only Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia also had more than one defensemen to make the top 20 list. Former Predator Kimmo Timonen ranks in just behind Suter at no. 13. To date, Nashville hasn’t been known for producing top scoring threats, but Patric Hornqvist landed in at number 15 on the top 20 players at the position of right wing.

Being listed in the company of the likes of Chicago’s Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa, the Capitals Alexander Semin, as well as San Jose’s Dany Heatley, Hornqvist finds himself in with some pretty elite company. When asked about the rankings, Hornqvist was surprised to be included but determined to prove he belongs on the list. “Of course that surprises me” Hornqvist said, adding “I’m happy for that. It gets some more pressure on my shoulders.”
